Mensenrechten centraal in de klas
De Universele Verklaring van de Rechten van de Mens werd na de Tweede Wereldoorlog geïntroduceerd door Eleonor Roosevelt. Met de ondertekening van de verklaring kregen alle mensen op aarde voor het eerst in de geschiedenis grondrechten of basisrechten. Deze rechten moesten hen beschermen tegen oorlog en gruwelijke handelingen tegen de ideeën van de vrijheid.
Mensenrechten vandaag de dag
Toch blijft het tot op de dag van vandaag een continue strijd om de Universele Verklaring van de Rechten van de Mens in de praktijk te brengen en mensen bewust te maken van het belang van deze rechten. In sommige landen staan deze mensenrechten zelfs onder druk. Denk maar aan de manier waarop diverse overheden de rechten van bepaalde groepen (bv. mensen van kleur, vrouwen, LGTBQIA+ …) ondermijnen. In bepaalde landen worden het recht van meningsuiting en persvrijheid nog altijd geschonden.
