Tuberculose (tbc): lesmateriaal voor in de klas
Wereld Tuberculose Dag (24 maart) wil iedereen bewust maken dat tuberculose nog steeds voorkomt in de wereld. Meer inspanningen zijn nodig om de ziekte te doen verdwijnen. Het is hoog tijd om een einde te stellen aan tuberculose die jaarlijks 1,7 miljoen doden veroorzaakt in de wereld.
Aandacht voor tuberculose
Op 24 maart 1882 kondigde de Duitse arts Robert Koch aan dat hij de bacterie Mycobacterium tuberculosis had ontdekt die tuberculose (TB) veroorzaakt. Naar aanleiding van deze datum is 100 jaar later Wereld Tuberculose Dag ontstaan. Op die dag wordt de impact van TB onder de aandacht gebracht.
Tuberculose is helaas geen verdwenen ziekte. Het is een ernstige, vaak besmettelijke bacteriële infectieziekte. De bacterie verspreidt zich van persoon tot persoon via de lucht. In de meeste gevallen worden de longen aangetast. Gelukkig kan je van tuberculose genezen met antibiotica.
De strijd tegen tuberculose
Wereldwijd is tuberculose de dodelijkste infectieziekte. Jaarlijks sterven meer dan 1,5 miljoen mensen aan de gevolgen van TB, grotendeels in andere continenten en voornamelijk in ontwikkelingslanden. Als TB-patiënten niet of slecht behandeld worden, kan dat tot hun dood leiden.
In België zijn er ongeveer 1000 nieuwe tuberculosepatiënten per jaar. Dat is veel minder dan vroeger en de cijfers zijn nog steeds dalende. België maakt deel uit van de landen waar tuberculose weinig voorkomt, met minder dan 10 gevallen per 100.000 inwoners per jaar.
Tuberculose is een sterk aan armoede-gerelateerde ziekte die vaker voorkomt in grote steden, omdat daar meer risicogroepen verblijven zoals kansarmen, daklozen en mensen uit landen waar tuberculose meer voorkomt. Het is om die reden dat de tuberculosecentra van de VRGT allemaal in een stad gelegen zijn, dicht bij de risicogroepen voor tuberculose, voor laagdrempelige zorg.
De Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie wil tuberculose volledig uitroeien tegen 2050. De tuberculosecijfers moeten absoluut verder blijven dalen.
Stigmatisering
Stigmatisering weerhoudt sommigen ervan om medische hulp of nazorg te zoeken bij tuberculose. Bepaalde bevolkingsgroepen lopen hierdoor een hoger risico. Maar iedereen kan tuberculose krijgen. Mensen met tuberculose vinden we overal waar we werken, leven, leren en tijd doorbrengen met familie en vrienden.

Jaarlijks ontwikkelt Damiaanactie materiaal over zijn projecten om je leerlingen verder te laten kijken dan hun eigen achtertuin. Zowel leraren als jongeren krijgen zo alle info over deze wereldwijde organisatie die zich inzet voor mensen met lepra of tbc.
