The sewing machine: Practical assignment

A sewing machine uses a mechanical technique to sew or decorate fabrics together. Unlike sewing by hand, the sewing machine uses two strands of thread, the upper thread and the bobbin thread. The upper thread runs from the thread spool to the needle, just above the fabric. The bobbin thread is wound on a bobbin that lies underneath the fabric. The needle (upper thread) makes an up and down movement through the fabric and forms a loop under the fabric with the bobbin (lower thread). You can set different stitch types, stitch lengths and tensions.

In addition to the explanation of the different stitch types and stitch lengths, you will also see practical examples and videos showing you how to:

  • prepare an upper thread;
  • threading a bobbin thread;
  • prepare a bobbin thread;
  • adjust the tension.
