Desiderius Erasmus: Biography


Erasmus lives in the late Middle Ages. It is a time of transition. There is a lot of criticism of the Catholic Church. As the son of a priest, things are not easy for him.

He studies Latin and later Greek. He writes a lot, both letters and books. The art of printing was invented shortly before his birth and Erasmus makes extensive use of it.

He is an important representative of humanism. He is inspired by many classical writers. People become central. It is also the time of the Renaissance.

His important works include the Adagia, a collection of proverbs and expressions, the translation of the New Testament from Greek and his best-known book Praise of Folly , a satire on society around 1500 AD.
