Group music in distance learning with brass players: how do you approach that?

How do you handle that? Guiding brass players remotely?

Sven Ysewyn and Juri Briat, group music teachers (brass players) at the Beveren Art Academy, explain how they arrived at this end product and which tools they used:

To arrive at this result, we used three programs.

  • Music notation program : Sibelius, Finale or Musescore

We have reworked the games and provided them with a click track. To keep things simple, it's important to choose music that contains no more than four or five voices. (preferably less, then it's easier). To put it all together it is also easier to take music that runs at the same tempo from beginning to end, delays can also be included in the click track but in the final performance it is more difficult to put everything together and makes it much more complex to mix. In this folder you will find a collection of the teaching materials on KlasCement about music notation.

  • Sound editing program : Audacity

With this program we entered the sound of each submitted video. In a first move, we merged each voice of the piece and exported this file to finally reassemble the mix of each voice. In the end we tried to cut out as much noise as possible and put a little bit of reverb on it, but doing this really requires a thorough knowledge of the program. • Video editing program : Lightworks

This is also a free program in which we put the images together. A good tutorial for Lightworks can be found here .
This program offers many possibilities and you can also edit the sound with it.
However, the more tracks there are, the heavier and more difficult it becomes to perform operations. In the first lockdown we mounted sixty votes one above the other. If you don't have a powerful computer, it's bound to fail and fail.

There is a lot that goes into making such videos. In the beginning it takes a lot of time and patience, but the students find it exciting and fantastic.
A computer with a solid graphics card is definitely a plus.
