De Groote Oorlog
De Eerste Wereldoorlog was de oorlog die aan alle oorlogen een einde zou maken. De geschiedenis maakte een andere bocht. De Groote oorlog is een internationaal symbool geworden voor oorlogsgeweld in zijn meest gruwelijke vorm. Toch blijven we ons afvragen wat we kunnen leren uit oorlog. Voor veel jongeren is de geschiedenis van de Groote Oorlog iets wat ver van hun bed ligt. Hoe kunnen we dit verhaal relevant maken voor een toekomstige generatie?
Geschiedenisles over de Groote Oorlog
Vier jaar strijd ontwrichtte talloze families en hertekende de Westhoek tot een maanlandschap. Nadien sloegen de mensen de handen in elkaar om dit alles terug op te bouwen, maar de littekens van dit verhaal zijn nog altijd zichtbaar. Elk op zich maken ze duidelijk dat er maar één woord als synoniem van ‘oorlog’ gebruikt mag worden: verlies.
Daarom is het belangrijk om met jouw klas aan de slag te gaan en je onder te dompelen in de geschiedenis van de Groote Oorlog. Bezoek verschillende herinneringsplekken waar talloze verhalen aan verbonden zijn of doe inspiratie op voor een nieuwe educatieve bundel over de Groote Oorlog.
Wapenstilstand
Op 11 november is de jaarlijkse herdenking van de wapenstilstand van 11 november 1918, die het einde betekende van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. De wapenstilstand ging in vanaf 11 uur. De organisatie 11.11.11 gaf haar naam aan dit moment. Zij zet jaarlijks rond deze periode belangrijke wereldthema's op de agenda via haar campagnes.
