Administrative leadership in learning schools: Handbook

This book is aimed at directors of educational organizations. To gain insight into administrative actions, the authors used research into successful school systems (such as in Ontario, Finland and Singapore) and successful school districts and interviewed a number of Dutch educational administrators. Administrators can employ similar leadership practices that school leaders use to develop learning schools. Directors tailor these leadership practices to the people, the situation and the context in which they work and the goals they want to achieve. Their administrative actions are colored by their personal qualities and personal identity.

This book combines theory and practice and makes clear how administrative leadership practices and personal qualities can contribute to the development of learning schools and thus to increasing the quality of education.

Both the theoretically based chapters and the practical approaches build a new foundation for professional identity development of administrators, according to Joseph Kessels, emeritus professor at the University of Twente (Chair of Human Resource Development) and professor of the Open University (Chair of Educational Leadership).
