Spanish Brabander by Gerbrand Adriaenszoon Bredero: Lesson idea
The Spanish Brabander is a comedy from 1617 by Gerbrand Adriaensz. Bredero. The play is about the Antwerp Spaniard Jerolimo, who moves to Amsterdam without money and pretends to be a rich man. There is hardly a main action, but the play consists of a series of lively scenes that evoke Amsterdam street life in the 17th century. It is known as the highlight of the Dutch comedy repertoire from the golden age. It also belongs to the canon of Dutch literature, the list of the most important literary works from the Dutch-speaking area from the Middle Ages to the present.
