La Fuite en Égypte

In this carefully compiled book, French art historian Jean Paris offers a very educational overview of how the Biblical story of the flight of Joseph, Mary and Jesus to Egypt (Matthew 2:13-23) has been depicted in art throughout history. Beautiful photos of about forty works of art are shown, each with an explanation of their origins and background. The works of art discussed date from ancient times to the eighteenth century. In addition to works by well-known masters (such as Cranach, Giotto, Dürer and Rembrandt), lesser-known artists are also discussed. The book contains paintings, mosaics, engravings, reliefs, miniatures, frescoes and church windows. Jean Paris discusses the various motifs that belong to the subject “Flight to Egypt” in art history: Departure to Egypt, journey, rest, arrival in and return from Egypt. The art book is very suitable for demonstrating religious lessons about the life of (the newborn) Jesus Christ. The book can also be very enriching in art education lessons. Finally, the works of art can also be shown and explained in the context of lessons about flight and migration.
