Tutorate: Association University & Colleges Antwerp

At Tutorate, students provide support to secondary school students.

Tutorate aims to improve the educational position of learners who are endangered. We try to promote the transfer in secondary education and the transfer to higher education. We do this by focusing on tutoring by tutors, whereby the learning delay is eliminated. The intention is also to increase the self-image and the study motivation of these students. The objective of Tutoraat is based on the observation that, to date, pupils who are endangered with learning end up in the waterfall system more often than average, and that this makes it difficult for them to enter higher education.

We achieve these objectives by working with tutees on:

Improve professional knowledge
Improve study skills, self-reliance and 'learning to learn'
Increase the knowledge of the instruction language (school language) Dutch
Improve social competences
Increase self-confidence and motivation
Introduce new social models in the frame of reference of the students (the tutor as teacher, example and friend)
Advising students about their choice of study and preparing them for the transition to higher education
